Dilation

Dilation of your eye is a necessary part of a complete eye examination by a retina specialist. This involves placement of eye drops which cause your pupil to become larger, allowing your eye doctor to view the inside of your eye for diagnostic purposes. You will likely notice difficulty with near vision and reading, as well as increased light sensitivity. It is a good idea to bring sunglasses to your appointment, and if you have never had your eyes dilated to bring a driver so that you may become accustomed to the sensation. Your eyes usually return to normal within a few hours, but in certain individuals, dilation can last for up to 12 hours, although this is uncommon.
